(History of a recently completed project)

Kandern Campus

In the year 2001, Project Renewal was initiated at Black Forest Academy. The plan for this project had two parts. It was designed to meet the needs of the dorm facilities as well as to repair and provide additional classrooms in our Altbau building.

As time progressed, Project Renewal planning underwent many changes. First of all, the funds we received early in the campaign were dedicated to needed renovations in our dormitories. In time we realized that our campus needs were more immediate and so the focus of the project shifted to our classroom buildings. Our dorms are now being renewed on an ongoing basis through our general budget. New furniture and other renovation projects are especially evident each summer throughout the residence program facilities.

The BFA Board then decided to focus our efforts on the opportunity to expand the facilities of the Altbau (German for "Old Building") on our Kandern campus. For the past four years we have been concentrating on renovating the Altbau into the new Janz Building (in honor of Janz Team who serves as the parent organization over BFA). The needs for more classrooms, a dedicated music area, a center for our Discovery Program, and an art studio were growing from year to year as our classrooms had become crowded. The Altbau also needed to be brought up to current fire safety standards to meet German law. Plans were further modified so as to add even more classrooms for expanded growth. The latest design also included a much-needed improved roof for the Altbau. These important improvements carried a significant cost, and this grew as the dollar lost nearly 40% of its value against Euro over the years, and as complications and changes in the plans were made. Thankfully, we have received many generous gifts from individuals, churches, foundations, and from student capital assessment fees. As of the 2006-07 year, ongoing completion costs have been shifted into the annual budget of the school.

The Altbau Renovations - Two Phases

Brand new art classroom PHASE I. We have completed the first phase of the Janz Building. The photo albums show some of it completed and in use. The new 4th-floor library and most of the needed classrooms are up and running. Also, the music rooms and practice studios are completed, the art studio is in full use, new washrooms are up to speed, and the Discovery Center has new offices and workrooms. Plus, we are all up to legal German code.

PHASE II. The final phase was completed in 2007. It involved the following:
  1. Renovation of the Maintenance / Shop area with garage facilities to service our fleet of dormitory vans.
  2. The completion of the roof on the west end of the Janz Building
  3. Further outside plastering and painting to complete the entire project.
  4. Added conference rooms for use by staff and students, with some additional space for storage.

Our goal to complete Project Renewal by mid-2006 was nearly met. An additional year was required for some of the finishing of the 3rd floor of the Janz Building and expansion of parking facilities. Many thanks to all of you who played a role in this project. Even beyond completion of the school campus improvements, our aging dormitory facilities will continue to be in a process of renewal, with a variety of projects each summer. We welcome people who are willing to join us in these endeavors by giving of their time, finances, and/or prayers.
